Northwestern CT Transit District opens new headquarters in Torrington

Northwestern Connecticut Transit District (NWCTD) has a new 48,000-square-foot headquarters in Torrington equipped with new electric bus infrastructure and administrative office space, Gov. Ned Lamont announced.

Northwestern Connecticut Transit District, which maintains a fleet of 18 medium-duty buses serving a 17-town area around Torrington and Winsted, held a grand opening for the headquarters at 281 Church St., with Lamont and transportation officials Monday afternoon.

The state purchased the site in 2023 and has spent $5 million in bond funds revamping the warehouse and office space to modernize the site. Now, the property is equipped with space for bus storage, maintenance and office work, and enhanced security and circulation options for vehicles. The site also has the charging infrastructure set up for the district’s electrified future, Lamont’s office said.

The renovated facility also has space that could be leased to local nonprofit groups or municipal needs, according to the state. NWCTD used to store its buses across town at 957 East Main St.

Before becoming NWCTD’s new headquarters, the Church Street property was most recently owned by the Torrington Lumber Co., and a local bus carrier before that.

“This new transit hub represents a significant step towards enhancing transportation accessibility and efficiency in our rural communities,” Lamont said Monday. “Investing in a larger state-owned garage also improves the Northwestern Connecticut Transit District’s ability to store and charge new battery electric buses. I wish them continued success serving the northwest corner of our state.”
