Norwalk Hospital union workers to hold rally amid contract negotiations, merger

A union that represents workers at Norwalk Hospital said it plans to hold a solidarity rally on Sunday as it calls for higher wages, more affordable benefits, safer working conditions and greater workplace fairness.

The rally comes as Norwalk Hospital’s parent company, Nuvance Health, is in the process of being acquired by Northwell Health, a 21-hospital New York-based nonprofit health system, on May 1.

The state signed off on that deal earlier this month.

The Norwalk Hospital workers are members of Connecticut Health Care Associates District 1199, a union that represents 3,000 healthcare workers statewide and is part of National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The union is in early talks with Nuvance Health about a new union contract, but it has not “gotten very far yet,” said Dave Hannon, president of CHCA District 1199.

“Our members are united,” he said. “This rally is about solidarity—within our own unit, with healthcare workers across the region, and with every patient and community member who depends on us. We are strongest when we stand together.”

Norwalk Hospital and CHCA District 1199 recently have held two bargaining sessions so far, said Nuvance Health spokeswoman Andrea Rynn.

"Both sides have exchanged proposals and engaged in respectful and cooperative discussions," she said. "We appreciate our employees’ right to assemble and remain committed to working in good faith with the union toward a fair and reasonable contract.”
