After reaching a settlement agreement last month that was approved by Connecticut regulators, Nuvance Health and Northwell Health said Wednesday that the two nonprofit health systems have officially merged.
The combined regional health system now serves 13 million people via 28 hospitals in communities across greater New York and Connecticut.
The system includes the 21 New York-based hospitals owned by Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system, and Nuvance Health’s hospitals in Danbury, Norwalk, Sharon and New Milford in Connecticut and three in New York. Together, they have a $22.6 billion operating budget and employ over 104,000 employees, including 22,000 nurses and 13,500 providers, as well as more than 1,050 ambulatory care and 73 urgent care locations.
The health system also can utilize the expertise of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies.
“This partnership opens a new and exciting chapter for Northwell Health and Nuvance Health to take patient care and services to an even higher level,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health.
The two health systems first announced plans to merge in February last year and filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application last May.
The state Office of Health Strategy, which oversees the CON application process for hospital and health system mergers and acquisitions in Connecticut, said that under the settlement agreement, ownership of Danbury Hospital (including its New Milford campus), Norwalk and Sharon Hospitals will be transferred to Northwell Health.
As part of the agreement, Northwell Health will invest at least $1 billion in Nuvance Health hospitals.
“Joining forces with Northwell Health strengthens our ability to meet the evolving needs of patients and ensures we can provide exceptional care for generations to come,” said Dr. John M. Murphy, president and CEO of Nuvance Health.
With the merger complete, patients now have access to care at more than 1,050 sites across Connecticut, New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.
Nuvance had maintained dual headquarters in Danbury and Poughkeepsie, New York, but now will combine its operations with Northwell, which is headquartered in New Hyde Park, New York.
