Ocean State Job Lot launched its “Choose Well” program in 2016 to encourage healthy lifestyles among associates and offer programs that would be of value to them and their families.
It wasn't an easy task, considering the company had to enact it in its corporate office, distribution center and 131 stores. But it was important to create a wellness program available to all employees. And over the past year, the company has built strong community partnerships through the program.
Community service can coincide with physical health, which is evident within Ocean State Job Lot's Choose Well program. The company has been the presenting sponsor at the PurpleStride Pancreatic Cancer Action Network walk in Rhode Island for the last couple of years.
This year the company is expanding its participation to include the Connecticut and Boston PurpleStride walks. In 2016, it partnered with the American Cancer Society to start educating its employees on the harms of tobacco use.
In keeping with anti-cancer initiatives, the company also made its headquarters tobacco free and implemented a discount on health insurance premiums for non-tobacco users.
