Hartford HealthCare on Wednesday received the green light from the state Office of Health Care Access to affiliate with Torrington’s Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
As part of the deal, Hartford HealthCare intends to invest $73 million into Charlotte Hungerford, the majority of it for maintenance and capital projects. The parties applied for certificate-of-need approval nearly one year ago.
The goals of the affiliation -- which adds a northwest-corner hospital to Hartford HealthCare’s statewide roster of six hospitals -- include enhancing Charlotte Hungerford’s existing service lines, improving care coordination and access, and supporting physician recruitment, Hartford HealthCare said.
“Building a true system of care across the continuum requires these types of new relationships,” HHC CEO Elliot Joseph said in a statement Thursday.
The deal cleared a hurdle in August, when OHCA decided not to refer it to the Attorney General for review of unfair or anti-competitive behavior. That hurdle was created by a 2015 law requiring enhanced review of large hospital deals.
Hartford HealthCare’s other hospitals include Hartford Hospital, Backus Hospital, The Hospital of Central Connecticut, MidState Medical Center, Natchaug Hospital and Windham Hospital.
Charlotte Hungerford Hospital has 122 beds.
The deal approval comes as Hartford HealthCare remains in contentious contract talks with Anthem, which has raised some concerns about the market power of both the hospital provider and the insurer.
