Farmington-based Companions and Homemakers, one of the state’s largest providers of in-home care, has sold its business to two separate companies.

Companions and Homemakers has sold its private pay division to TheKey, a national home-care company with existing operations in Connecticut.

Companions sold its Medicare business to Georgia-based AccordCare, which operates Companions Forever LLC in Newington.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

The sale of both divisions constitutes the entire Companions and Homemakers company, officials said.

Companions and Homemakers has been one of Greater Hartford’s largest women-owned businesses over the years, led by CEO Linda Grigerek. The company was founded in 1990.

As of March 2022, Companions and Homemakers reported 2,241 local employees and 4,439 overall employees. It also reported five local offices and 10 total locations, according to Hartford Business Journal’s Book of Lists.

Companions & Homemakers reported a significant surge in referrals at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as patients increasingly wanted to recover at home and avoid institutional care facilities that could increase the risks of spreading the disease.
