Woodbridge-based green chemistry company P2 Science Inc. has launched its 12th green chemistry-based product to be commercialized since April 2020: Herbenone.
Herbenone is a new herbal aroma chemical, which imparts the scents of basil and jasmine, and can be used in toiletries, soaps, creams and shampoos.
Ryan Cheng, vice president of business development, has said customers have been demanding high-performing and sustainable ingredients to include in their beauty products.
Tony Reichert, master perfumer, commented, “I think it would work really well in any herbal fragrance.” He noted additional applications include transparent florals, fougéres and men’s toiletry products.
As with its other P2 products, the company says Herbenone is built on its proprietary green chemistry platform and derived from upcycled forestry feedstocks from Forest Stewardship Council certified pine trees. Herbenone also falls under P2’s plant-a-forest initiative, where P2 plants a tree for every kilogram of product sold. Each tree removes roughly a ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its life, according to the company’s statement.
Commercial production is underway at P2’s manufacturing facility in Naugatuck.
Co-founded by Paul Anastas, head of the Yale Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, the company started up its first manufacturing plant in September 2018. It produces novel renewable aroma chemicals and cosmetic ingredients.
Investors in P2 include BASF Venture Capital, Xeraya Capital, Elm Street Ventures, Connecticut Innovations, Ironwood Capital, HG Ventures and Chanel.
The company’s Citrolatum line is billed as an alternative to petrolatum, as it has a similar consistency. The company’s CitroVisc line was developed for use in both skin and hair care products. According to the company, it provides softening and soothing effects.
