Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam on Friday said he will appoint a Philadelphia police captain, Tyrell J. McCoy, as the capital city’s next chief of police.
McCoy currently commands the inspections bureau at Philadelphia Police Department.
Arulampalam said McCoy brings nearly two decades of law enforcement experience to the role.
“We are thrilled to welcome Captain McCoy to Hartford,” Arulampalam said. “His extensive experience, commitment to community engagement and innovative approach to public safety make him the ideal leader for our police department.
McCoy will replace interim Police Chief Kenny Howell.
McCoy has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Holy Family University and a master's degree in business administration from Eastern University. He has completed executive management training at Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
McCoy will be presented to the Hartford Court of Common Council at the council’s Feb. 10 meeting.
