The first Black woman to start a beer company in Connecticut will be honored at the New Haven Museum this week with an exhibition of items from her company.
Alisa Bowens-Mercado, founder of Rhythm Brewing Co., will be honored on Friday with the debut of a display of items she recently donated to the New Haven Museum, at 114 Whitney Ave.
Rhythm Brewing Co. products, photographs and promotional materials will be on view in the Community Case in the museum’s rotunda for the month of August. The Community Case “highlights individual stories that add to the story of New Haven,” the museum said in a statement.
Bowens-Mercado’s Rhythm lager is brewed with South African hops and was inspired by her grandmothers. She recently collaborated on a lager with Boston Beer Company, maker of Samuel Adams beers in Boston.
Bowens-Mercado also runs Alisa’s House of Salsa in the Westville neighborhood of New Haven, and some of her salsa-dancing shoes will be included in the exhibit.
