Pratt & Whitney has been awarded an almost $4.4 billion contract modification by the U.S. Department of Defense to build more than 100 new jet engines, according to records.
Pratt & Whitney, the East Hartford-based aerospace manufacturer, will produce and deliver 152 F135-PW-100 propulsion systems — 108 for the Air Force, 29 for the Navy, and 15 for the Marine Corps — and 26 F135-PW-600 propulsion systems for the Marine Corps as part of the $4.38 billion undefinitized contract modification.
According to information from the U.S. DoD, more than 25% of the work for the contract will take place in Pratt’s Connecticut locations and is expected to be completed in Sept. 2024.
Per the contract, the modification is for the U.S. military’s 15th and 16th F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter production lots. Through the contract, Pratt will also acquire long lead-time components, parts, and materials associated with F135-PW-100 and F135-PW-600 engines for non-U.S. DoD participants and foreign military sales customers.
The contract also provides money for a test engine for flight test efforts, according to information from the U.S. DoD.
