A new budget-conscious grocery store is coming to the Wolcott Street retail district in Waterbury.
Price Rite Marketplace has signed a 10-year lease, with options to renew, on a roughly 34,000-square-foot space in a large retail plaza at 881 Wolcott St., according to Lorraine Tartaglia, principal of Tartaglia Commercial Properties, owner of the plaza.
The location had formerly housed discount retail store Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.
Tartaglia said the store is targeting a May opening date, but management is hoping for an even earlier start to operations.
William Cafero, of Charter Realty, brokered the lease.
Attempts to reach a representative of Wakefern Food Corp., parent company of Price Rite, were not immediately successful Thursday.
Price Rite has more than 62 locations across Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, according to Wakefern’s website.
Waterbury Economic Development Director Joseph McGrath said the city is looking forward to an expansion of grocery options, as well as an occupant for a significant space in the Wolcott Street shopping retail district. McGrath noted a former Rite Aid pharmacy nearby is being remodeled into a Bank of America branch, while a new Caliber Collision site is under construction at one end of the retail district, near the Wolcott town line.
Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski noted the arrival of the new grocer as “one more piece in the continuing redevelopment of the Wolcott Street corridor.”
“We are very happy to welcome Price Rite to that location,” Pernerewski said. “It is a perfect use of what has been an empty building. Not only will it provide an additional option for people to buy groceries, it will create employment opportunities as well.”
