Three utility companies — United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas — are donating some 6,900 protective masks to Yale New Haven Health, amid a national shortage of protective gear for medical personnel fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The utilities, all subsidiaries of the Orange-based Avangrid, indicated the donation includes 3,700 surgical masks and 3,200 N95 respirators. It is part of a larger donation from Avangrid, which is providing 31,000 protective masks to health-care providers in multiple states.

Tony Marone, president and CEO of Avangrid Networks, said the company already had protective masks in storage, so it decided to make them available to medical personnel and first responders, given the current shortage.

“We sincerely hope that by doing this we are able to help save lives,” Marone said in an announcement.

Gov. Ned Lamont reported on Tuesday that 3,128 Connecticut residents had tested positive for coronavirus, with 608 hospitalizations and 69 deaths.

United Illuminating is also working to reinforce electrical systems in hospitals and other key facilities, to ensure there won’t be any service interruptions, according to the company.

Avangrid and its charitable arm, the Avangrid Foundation, recently committed $2 million to support coronavirus relief and recovery.
