PURA wraps Verizon strike probe

The state’s utilities regulator will not order Verizon to issue any refunds to Connecticut customers as a result of a 49-day labor strike that ended earlier this year.

State law requires the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to investigate any work stoppage at a public-service company that lasts more than seven days. The review, launched over the summer, is meant to determine whether a company earned unreasonable profits and whether service was impaired during the stoppage.

In its Nov. 30 decision, PURA found that Verizon had not earned unreasonable profits during the strike. In fact, PURA said the telecom giant faced higher expenses and lower revenue in Connecticut, where it has approximately 16,000 landline customers, during the April to May work stoppage.

PURA found that the strike resulted in reduced maintenance appointments and out-of-service repairs. However, the agency will not issue any remedial orders.

“[PURA] notes that during the labor dispute, Verizon used its best efforts to maintain the network and service for its existing retail and wholesale customers,” PURA said in its decision.

PURA also said that Verizon had already issued credits to 128 customers.
