Guilford life sciences firm Quantum-Si Inc. announced Tuesday it has signed a lease for a new headquarters at the Winchester Works building in New Haven.
The new location will include 65,000 square feet of office, research and development space. The lease is for 10 years. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Serial entrepreneur Jonathan Rothberg founded Quantum-Si in 2013. The company is focused on the field of proteomics, or the study of proteins. Its technology is powered by a semiconductor chip which enables single-molecule protein sequencing. The technology can be used to advance drug discovery and for diagnostics, according to the company.
Quantum-Si will begin relocating to the new headquarters in the first half of 2022. Last June, the company also announced it had leased a new product development and operations facility in San Diego, which opened this past fall.
Quantum-Si CEO John Stark said the combined campuses in Connecticut and California will be the “cornerstone of growth” for the company’s research, development and commercial operations.
“Having a presence in these vibrant life sciences hubs will enable Quantum-Si to recruit high-caliber talent as we continue to scale up operations ahead of our planned platform commercial launch in 2022,” Stark said.
Winchester Works is at 115 Munson St., near Yale’s Science Hill. Winchester Office LLC bought the property in late 2019 and has made upgrades to entice life science tenants.
Winchester Works is the first stage in the Winchester Center master plan, which aims to overhaul the former Winchester firearms factory site into residential, retail, office and lab space.
Mayor Justin Elicker said the lease announcement is “another important milestone” for Winchester Works.
“Quantum Si joins an impressive innovation ecosystem in New Haven and we are inspired to welcome their outstanding scientific team working to improve health outcomes around the world,” Elicker said.
Winchester Office LLC comprises LMXD – an affiliated company of L+M Development Partners – Twining Properties and the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group.
Jake Pine, senior director at LMXD, said Quantum-Si will make a significant impact and bring both cutting-edge technology and critical jobs to Winchester Works.
“The life sciences sector is going to play a critical role in our nation’s post-pandemic recovery, and we believe that New Haven – particularly the Winchester Works campus – will help with that resurgence,” Pine said.
Quantum-Si is following another biotech firm, Halda Therapeutics, which moved to Winchester Works this past June.
