Quinnipiac School of Medicine receives significant gift

Contributed Bill and Barbara Weldon

Quinnipiac University’s Frank H. Netter M.D. School of Medicine has received a $5 million matching gift commitment from two alumni.

Bill Weldon, former chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, and his wife Barbara Weldon, both members of the class of 1971, gave the gift in support of need-based scholarships for students at the medical school.

The money will be deployed in a dollar-for-dollar match to stimulate the giving of an additional $5 million.

The Weldons have been notable donors to Quinnipiac in the past. In 2013, they gave $1 million to endow the William and Barbara Weldon Chair in Rehabilitation Medicine, now the Dean’s Chair in Medicine. In 2019, they donated $15 million to advance the university’s strategic priorities.

Quinnipiac says the couple is particularly focused on the need for more primary care physicians with this latest gift.

“The first goal when people talked about creating a medical school at Quinnipiac was to support general practitioners because there’s a tremendous shortage of them right now in our country,” said Barbara Weldon. “Bill and I were very supportive of that because they’re so desperately needed.”

According to the American Journal of Medicine, fewer than a quarter of physicians specialize in primary care.

“The generous matching gift from the Weldons is already making a significant impact by reducing student debt and enhancing our ability to engage with supporters across Connecticut and beyond,” said Dr. Phillip M. Boiselle, dean of the medical school.
