Quinnipiac to fine and restrict wi-fi for students who refuse vaccination

Quinnipiac University will fine students who refuse to submit vaccination paperwork and restrict their internet access, the school announced Monday. 

The university’s policies were first reported in the student newspaper, the Quinnipiac Chronicle, which disclosed the contents of an email sent to approximately 600 students who had yet to upload documents relating to their vaccine status. The penalties were confirmed by a school spokesman.

Associate Vice President for Public Relations John Morgan said, “Our hope is we don’t have to assess these charges on anyone, but rather the students provide their necessary documentation as required before the start of the semester.” 

Students arriving on campus for the fall semester can be fined $100 per week for failing to request exemptions or submit proof of vaccination. After two weeks, the fine rises by $25 every two weeks to a maximum of $200 a week, totaling up to $2,275 for the entire semester.

Students will lose access to the university’s computer network and wi-fi if they haven’t uploaded documents by Sept. 14. 

As of Tuesday morning, an additional 30 students had uploaded vaccination records. Just under 10,000 students are expected to return to the Hamden campus for the fall semester, Morgan said. All full-time faculty and staff have provided the necessary vaccine documentation, he added.

New Haven’s Albertus Magnus College has said students who have not been vaccinated or received an exemption will not be allowed on campus at all. 

“Undergraduate students who are not in compliance with the vaccine requirement will be unable to access classes, move into residence halls, or participate in campus activities, including athletics,” the college said on its website. 

Both the University of New Haven and Yale University have announced mandates that all students be fully vaccinated or obtain exemptions by the start of their fall semesters.

“Those refusing vaccine, or who fail to meet the vaccination requirement by the determined deadline, will not be allowed to remain on campus,” Yale’s website states.
