John Dankosky, a popular radio reporter and editor for Connecticut Public, is leaving the organization on Nov. 1, the company announced Tuesday.
Dankosky, who started at Connecticut Public, which includes WNPR and CPTV, in 1994 has accepted a voluntary separation package that was recently offered to tenured staff, the company said.
Mark Contreras, Connecticut Public’s new CEO, in a letter to staff Monday did not say whether any other veteran employees have taken voluntary separation offers.
The Hartford station originally hired Dankosky as host for the “Morning Edition” news program in 1994 before he became the host of “Where We Live” and later a co-host on The Wheelhouse with Colin McEnroe.
Dankosky, who has won several national awards, in April 2016 co-founded the New England News Collaborative, an eight-station consortium of public radio news bureaus throughout New England, and is also the host of its weekly show NEXT.
Looking back on his tenure at Connecticut Public, Dankosky said he’s most proud of his work that helped expand the organization and its new coverage.
“I was lucky enough to work with and then hire dozens and dozens and dozens of incredibly talented journalists and hosts and producers and audio creators,” Dankosky said. “The thing I’m most proud of is having gotten a chance to work with all those people on so many interesting projects and shows that were meaningful to the people of Connecticut and meaningful to the people of the country.”
Dankosky said he plans to stay in the news media, but did not detail his future plans.
Contreras said Connecticut Public will continue overseeing the New England News Collaborative. Dankosky said he hopes to be involved in the collaborative beyond Nov. 1.
