A new center working to reintegrate ex-offenders back into their communities is set to open in Hartford’s City Hall.
The Hartford Foundation has provided a three-year, $450,000 grant to support The Reentry Welcome Center, which will become the state’s first facility to receive prisoners from the state Department of Correction (DOC) directly after their release.
In March 2017, the Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to Hartford’s Community Partners (CPA) in Action to plan the re-entry center. The area in City Hall formerly housed a healthcare clinic run by St. Francis, a foundation spokesman said Wednesday.
More than 1,000 people in 2016 released from a correctional facility, halfway house or parole supervision returned to Hartford, according to DOC. The lack of resources for ex-offenders returning to society has jeopardized their successful reintegration, city officials have said.
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin and Connecticut First Lady Cathy Malloy will be joined by leaders from the foundation, CPA and others during a ribbon cutting Wednesday at 2 p.m. in City Hall at 550 Main St.
