Connecticut is one of the safest states in the nation when it comes to fatal injuries in the workplace, according to new information from the state.
According to January’s issue of The Connecticut Economic Digest, a monthly joint publication from the state Department of Labor and Department of Economic and Community Development, 23 people died via injuries at work in 2021, a rate of 1.4 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers.
Erin Wilkins, an associate research analyst for the state Department of Labor, said 2021’s mark is the lowest recorded number of deaths since they began tracking statistics in 1992. Since then, that state has averaged 38 work-related deaths a year.
2021 saw a decrease from 2020’s 29 deaths and is below Connecticut’s annual average of 38 work-related deaths a year, according to information from the state. Only Rhode Island recorded a rate lower than Connecticut’s in 2021.
In total, the country had 5,190 deaths related to workplace injuries in 2021, an increase from 2020’s 4,764 deaths. The fatal injury rate increased from 3.4 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2020 to 3.6 in 2021.
