Revitalized senior complex unveiled in New Haven

Costar The Edith Johnson apartment complex, 114 Bristol St., New Haven

New Haven officials celebrated the renovation of the Edith Johnson apartment complex, a 14-story, 95-apartment high-rise community serving low-income elderly residents.

The property dates back to the 1970s at 114 Bristol St., in the city’s Dixwell neighborhood.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker welcomed representatives from Boston-based Beacon Communities, which in 2021 began renovations to upgrade and revitalize the Edith Johnson apartments so that it remains an affordable senior community, city officials said.

The renovated building features 85 studios and 10, one-bedroom units that are tailored to the needs of aging residents. New physical improvements to the building include a new facade, windows, roof, revitalized common areas and improvements to the life-safety systems of the facility.

All units are covered by a Section 8 contract.

Beacon Communities also partnered with Corcoran Jennison, and the Housing Authority of the City of New Haven to transform the Elm Haven public housing development into Monterey Place in the 1990s.
