Sabrina Cameron is the executive vice president at Adelbrook Inc., a nonprofit agency serving the most acute individuals in the state diagnosed with autism and intellectual disabilities. Cameron has worked at Adelbrook for the last 10 years starting as a program director and successfully promoting through the ranks.
Cameron is also an adjunct professor in the social work department at Southern Connecticut State University where she teaches in both the bachelor’s and master’s level programs.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
My Adelbrook team and I created “forever homes” for individuals diagnosed with autism and other co-occurring diagnoses. These homes are community-based residences for individuals who require 24/7 supports outside of their families' care while maintaining a close connection to their loved ones. To date, these homes have helped over 40 individuals and their families remain in the community rather than residential care.
How are you involved in the community?
I’ve always maintained a connection to the community through multiple organizations. As a student from elementary school through college I volunteered with Special Olympics, in classrooms with individuals with special needs, fundraising, organizing special events like a walk for Scleroderma through the Tri-State chapter, participating in events with the CT Challenge Program, raising money for cancer survivors, Relay for Life, or the MS Foundation.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I have three very active children who are all involved in sports and in the community, which keeps most of my 'free' time busy. When time allows I like to run, hike and paddleboard. I also enjoy cake decorating and photography.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Helped build successful programs for individuals with autism and other intellectual disabilities benefitting the entire state.
• Has been nominated twice for the J. Philip Outstanding Teacher Award in three years of teaching.
• Has maintained volunteer connections in the community and instills the importance of helping others and giving back to my children.
• Has had a successful career, promoted to executive vice president by 39 years of age, helping to run an agency serving over 340 individuals with complex needs.
A self-taught, cake decorator, I enjoy making everything from superhero and fairy cakes for birthdays to wedding cakes.
