A $2.6 million federal grant awarded to Sacred Heart University’s nursing college will be used for student financial aid.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded the grant, which aims to boost the number of nurses in underserved communities, to the university’s Dr. Susan L. Davis R.N., & Richard J. Henley College of Nursing.

The grant makes it possible for the Fairfield-based Catholic college to provide up to $25,000 each to eight eligible full-time nursing students and up to $15,000 each to 18 qualified part-time nursing students annually for the next four years.

The funding is geared for nursing students who are on track to become certified as primary care or psychiatric nurse practitioners at the doctorate, master’s or post-master’s level. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.2 grade point average and their registered nurse license.

According to the university, the grant is expected to help increase the number of primary care and psychiatric nurse practitioners available to work in medically underserved areas, both urban and rural. Sacred Heart anticipates it will also boost enrollment and attract diverse nursing student candidates.
