Southern Connecticut State University President Joe Bertolino has announced he will be stepping down as the university’s 12th president at the end of the spring 2023 semester.
Bertolino has served as SCSU’s president since 2016.
Bertolino has been a candidate for the position of president for Stockton University in New Jersey. Bertolino said the Stockton Board of Trustees announced Friday that he has been selected to serve as the university’s 6th president. Bertolino will begin his new position July 1.
Bertolino said this new position will bring him back to where he grew up, and closer to family. He also remarked that Stockton is his mother’s alma mater.
Bertolino said in an announcement to the SCSU community, “I want to stress that my decision does not reflect a change in my affinity for this university. Southern is an extraordinary institution.”
According to Bertolino, Southern has demonstrated an extended commitment to social justice and anti-racism, which provides students with examples to make positive change upon entering society. Bertolino said he is particularly proud of these achievements.
CSCU System President Terrence Cheng will soon announce an interim president for SCSU, who Bertolino will work closely with to ensure a smooth transition.
Bertolino stated, “I have the utmost confidence in those who will guide Southern in the coming months. We have talent and smarts in our leadership team, in the broader SCSU community, and throughout the CSCU system."
