Self storage facility opens in Simsbury

A self-storage facility is up and running in Simsbury on the Avon town line that will meet the needs of an increasing number of new residential tenants in the area, owners said.

The Talcott Mountain Self Storage at 70 Hopmeadow St., in the Weatogue section of Simsbury, features 478 storage units, with 160 of them climate controlled.

The facility also features a drive-up option where vehicles can reach their units inside the climate-control area, “so they don’t have to go into the building, they just drive right up to the door,” said developer David Richman, who runs the facility with fellow owner David Burr.

Richman said the project is much needed in the area with the high number of residential units under construction.

“With all apartments being built, there’s a huge demand,” he said.

The facility opened less than a month ago after more than two years of planning, and it sits in a planned development district zoned for this type of use, Richman said

He and Burr are leasing the land from owner Mark Greenberg of Litchfield County.

The facility, built in 2022, is one story and also has outdoor storage for campers, boats and trailers. Developers are looking to install solar panels in the future.

The 13-acre lot had previously been an old corn field that will generate more taxes to the town, Richman said. It is now appraised at nearly $3.35 million.
