The International Skating Center of Connecticut is looking to expand its Simsbury facility with a new 25,170-square-foot addition.
The added space to the facility, located at 1375 Hopmeadow St., would make room for two new half-size ice rinks that would be used for training and youth activities, according to a project application that has been submitted to the town of Simsbury.
The existing 78,000-square-foot facility has two full-size ice rinks and 420 parking spaces. The expanded facility would have 103,170 square feet and less parking. The addition would take up some underutilized parking space on the 17-acre property, according to the project application.
The skating center is owned and operated by BMW Sports LLC, but the land on which the facility sits is owned by the town of Simsbury.
BMW Sports’ principals include Managing Member Kelle Becconsall, Paul Melanson and Adam Westhaver, state business records show.
The skating center debuted in 1994, and is currently used for figure skating and ice hockey training, as well as hockey games and general skating.
In addition to the two new half-sized ice rinks, the expansion will include a partial second floor mezzanine that will provide a viewing area, storage, offices and exercise space, according to the project proposal.
The town’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to discuss the proposed expansion at its next meeting on Monday, June 17.
