Small businesses get a break on health insurance rules ‒ but only until Dec. 15

Photo | CT Mirror DSS has hired over 100 new staff members to help with Medicaid unwinding. The agency is also ramping up the number of contracted staff to support its shared operations with Access Health CT, including call centers and data entry.

Small businesses have until Dec. 15 to take advantage of a special waiver to enroll in group health insurance at Access Health CT, the state’s official insurance marketplace.

Under the waiver, businesses with fewer than 50 employees can enroll in a group plan without being subject to the minimum employee participation rate requirement. Only businesses not currently enrolled in the Small Business Health Options Program are eligible for the waiver.

Access Health said it is offering the waiver for a limited time to boost the number of small businesses offering insurance.

“By eliminating the minimum employee requirement, more small businesses are able to offer a health insurance benefit they may not otherwise have been able to provide to their employees, supporting our mission to increase the rate of the insured,”  said John Carbone, director of small business and product development for Access Health.

Small businesses can enroll in plans through Access Health CT or directly with a carrier. Access Health offers free quotes on the cost of plans and access to insurance brokers on its website for small businesses, www.AccessHealthCTSmallBiz.com.
