Something new on tap at Woodbridge brewery

New England Brewing Company recently debuted a new craft beer, created in conjunction with two organizations working to increase diversity and inclusion in the beer industry.

The limited release beer, dubbed Kold IPA, made its public debut in NEBCO’s taproom, located at 175 Amity Rd. Woodbridge, in early September.

The brewery partnered with Beer Kulture and Craft Crew to release Kold IPA, which brewers likened to “a straw gold clear IPA with the hop profile of a West Coast IPA.”

NEBCO’s Head Brewer Greg Radawich said of the latest libation on tap, “It has the punchy aromatics and high bitterness typical of a West Coast IPA, but the drier, crisp clean finish that comes with the cold IPA process.”

Beer Kulture, a nonprofit focused on increasing diversity and inclusion within the beer industry, was happy to join the initiative to create Kold IPA.

“Participating in initiatives like this is a no brainer for us” said Beer Kulture CEO, President and Co-founder Latiesha Cook. “We’re always looking for ways to support opportunities to help bring Black, African American, Hispanic, Native North American, Pacific Islander and other BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) into the industry and help lower the barrier to access.”

The other partner in the new brew, Craft Crew - the Connecticut-based lifestyle group working to widen the demographic in craft beer and help communities throughout the state - was eager to join the collaboration, as well.

NEBCO’s Director of Sales and Marketing Jamal Robinson said the new beer ties in nicely with NEBCO’s ongoing efforts to provide more opportunities for people of color in the beer industry.

In 2020, NEBCO teamed with Sacred Heart University in Fairfield to create the African American Brewing Scholarship. Sales of Kold IPA will help fund the scholarship.

The brewing science certificate program at SHU gives students an education in brewing and provides hands-on experience. As part of the scholarship, the selected recipients will receive an internship at NEBCO following completion of the program.

Robinson said “The Kollaboration” in creating Kold IPA also includes New Haven native, DJ and abstract graffiti artist, Dooley-O, who created the artwork for the can label using his signature graffiti style.

Kold IPA is available at the NEBCO taproom in 16 oz can four-packs and on draft.
