South Windsor Chamber honors local businesses

Broad Brook Gardens Flower & Gift Shop was presented the Business of the Year award at the recent South Windsor Chamber of Commerce gala. The shop, which has been serving South Windsor since 1983, was cited for its customer and community service.

South Windsor Veterinary Clinic LLC was honored as the small business of the year and J&B Sportswear and Lettering, operated by the Ojala family, was named the family business of the year during the event at Maneeley's Banquet Facility.

ALDI, Inc. received the Beautification Award for landscaping along Rye Street that works to diminish the 11-acre distribution center.

HYPE honors three for entrepreneurship

Parle IV, LearnToProgram and Sea Tea Improv have been honored as Entrepreneurship Award winners by Hartford Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs (HYPE), an initiative of the MetroHartford Alliance. LearnToProgram, winner of HYPE's Business Launch Award and a $2,500 cash prize, publishes online courses on web, mobile and game development. The 17 courses are designed to be completed by the beginning or intermediate developer and have immediate impact on their skillset.

Sea Tea Improv, winner of HYPE's Business Excellence Award and a $2,500 cash prize, performs two monthly improv comedy shows in Hartford as well as shows for corporate events and private parties. Sea Tea Improv recently opened an improv comedy studio in downtown Hartford.

Parle IV, winner of HYPE's Business Pre-Launch Award and a $2,500 cash prize, designs and sells its own dress shirts directly to consumers online utilizing a web-based e-commerce retail model.

Johnson named president of state podiatric group

Thomas V. Johnson, a practicing podiatrist in Enfield and South Windsor has been named president of the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Johnson has been in practice for more than 25 years with PodiatryCare and the Heel Pain Center, PC. He is on staff at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Johnson Memorial Medical Center in Enfield and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs.

He has served as treasurer, board member and vice president of the association and was the recipient of the Connecticut secretary of the state's public service award in 2005.

NCCJ honors four

The National Conference for Community and Justice has chosen four area business leaders for its Annual Human Relations Award.

NCCJ, founded in 1927 as the National Conference for Christians and Jews, will honor the following: Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for The Travelers Cos. Inc.; Pat Meiser, athletics director, University of Hartford; JoAnn Price, co-founder/managing director, Fairview Capital; and Susan Rottner, retired president of Bank of America Connecticut.

They were feted at NCCJ's award dinner April 24 Hartford Marriott Hotel.

The award honors individuals and companies who have distinguished themselves in their daily lives with open-mindedness and respect, showing leadership by example, and diligence in their fight for human rights and dignity.
