Valerie L. Powell-Stafford was formally welcomed Thursday as president of St. Francis Hospital and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford.

The hospitals, which are part of Trinity Health Of New England, hosted a blessing and commissioning ceremony to welcome Powell-Stafford.

The event was held in front of colleagues, healthcare providers, and federal, state and local leaders in the Saint Francis Rotunda. The ceremony included a formal blessing by the Most Rev. Christopher J. Coyne, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Hartford, and a gift presentation.

Also attending the ceremony were U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, and state Rep. Joshua Hall (D-Hartford).

Trinity Health Of New England President and CEO Montez Carter welcomed Powell-Stafford and cited her extensive leadership experience, as well as her “energy and enthusiasm.”

Powell-Stafford was named president in May, and has more than 25 years of experience, having most recently served as president and CEO of HCA Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. She officially began in her new role on June 3.
