New Britain gunmaker Stag Arms says it’s leaving the city and looking to land in a community that is friendly to the firearms industry.
The manufacturer of automatic and semiautomatic AR-15 rifles on Friday afternoon announced its board of directors agreed to move the company headquarters on John Downey Drive to a place that has “significant support for the firearms industry.”
According to a statement, Stag Arms has compiled a list of potential landing spots, but didn’t specify which areas are under consideration. The board will decide on a new location in the coming months and the company will begin relocating its sales and office staff to the new headquarters.
It was not immediately clear how many employees will be affected by the relocation. Stag Arms could not be reached for comment.
The decision, officials say, is part of the board’s strategic initiative to improve its “overall customer experience.”
“The pieces are in place and we are ready to transition production and fulfillment operations immediately from a narrow facility-based approach in New Britain to a distributed ecosystem,” Stag Arms President Anthony Ash said in a statement.
In Dec. 2015, Stag Arms’ CEO Mark Malkowski pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court after the company was caught manufacturing unserialized firearms. Malkowski also pleaded guilty to felony possession of a machine gun and accepted a lifetime ban on any executive leadership of a gunmaker.
Stag Arms was acquired months later by private equity firm White Wolf Capital. The company at the time said it planned to continue operating in New Britain, where it was founded in 2003.
