Stonington Vineyards, a local landmark and a founding member of the Connecticut Wine Trail, has been sold to a private family buyer.
Stonington Vineyards was established in 1987 by Nick and Happy Smith. Both passed away in recent years.
According to land records, the vineyards property, at 523 Taugwonk Road, sold on March 14 for $2.24 million.
The buyer was Houstonington Real Estate LLC, which is controlled by John and Ann Houston, of Essex.
The winery produces 6,000 to 7,000 cases of wine per year and is best known for its chardonnay and proprietary Seaport White blend. It sells 90% of its production at its tasting room on the property, and the remainder through shops and restaurants in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Osage Advisors, which managed the sale, says the new buyer is committed to preserving the winery’s heritage, and intends to expand its presence in the local food scene, host weddings, and increase other visitor opportunities on the property.
"The new owners of Stonington Vineyards have a unique and heartfelt story. They have always been captivated by what makes Stonington truly special, and I am confident that they will successfully grow the business while respecting its roots," said Keith Dee, president of Osage Advisors.
