Grocery store chain Stop & Shop on Friday announced that it will close 32 locations as part of an effort to cull underperforming stores by the end of the year and position the company for growth.
There are five Connecticut stores slated for closure:
The locations are expected to close on or before Nov. 2.
In the announcement, Stop & Shop noted that other stores in Torrington, Stamford, Milford and Danbury will remain open.
Stop & Shop will also close stores in New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Specific store closing dates will be announced at a later date.
Stop & Shop said that once the 32 stores are closed, it will “continue to have a strong presence across its five-state footprint with more than 350 stores.”
The company will continue to operate 81 stores in Connecticut.
Stop & Shop associates at impacted locations will be offered other opportunities within the company, according to the announcement.
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
Reid also said that Stop & Shop is focused on “growing through large, multi-year price investments and a stronger customer value proposition, both in-store and online. “
Stop & Shop, which is owned by the Dutch multinational company Ahold Delhaize, employs 54,000 associates throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey.
