Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC announced Monday that it will stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products at its 360 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

The grocery retailer said it will end sales of tobacco products at all stores by Aug. 31.

As part of its effort to promote health and wellness, Stop & Shop is holding two cigarette buyback events on Aug. 28 at stores in New York and Boston.

“This is a step in the right direction toward ending Big Tobacco’s influence on kids, and we know even more can be done to reduce the toll of tobacco in our communities,” said Dr. Karen E. Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society. “From state and local governments to schools and businesses, we can all play a part in protecting public health.”

Worldwide, about 780 million people want to quit smoking, but only 30% have access to the tools to do so, according to the World Health Organization.

Stop & Shop is owned by the Dutch-Belgian multinational retail and wholesale holding company Ahold Delhaize. The company had 402,000 employees and generated €1.9 billion, or $2.1 billion, in 2023, according to its most recent annual report.

Stop & Shop in July announced that it will close 32 locations as part of an effort to cull underperforming stores by the end of the year.

That includes five Connecticut stores.
