SUBSTANCE ABUSE ACTION COUNCIL HONORS MIDDLESEX HOSPITAL

The Middlesex County Substance Abuse Action Council has honored Middlesex Hospital with its Harry Eben Burr Business Award for its efforts to implement, promote and support substance abuse prevention and/or recovery efforts.

Vincent G. Capese Jr., CEO, accepted on behalf of the hospital during the council's annual awards breakfast meeting on Oct. 12 at the Inn at Middletown.

The EDGE (Excellent Decision Guiding Everyday) Teams from Durham and Middlefield were honored as the outstanding local prevention initiative at the town, school or regional level.

Susan Bransfield, first selectwoman of Portland, won the Terry Concannon Award, which is presented to an elected official who has made strides in reducing substance abuse.

Andrea Reu, from Partners in Community in Clinton, won the Father Michael O'Hara Volunteer Award for volunteer work that contributes to reducing substance abuse.

And Mackenzie Holdmeyer, a recent graduate of Valley Regional High School, won the youth volunteer award for her work with the Tri-Town Substance Abuse Prevention Council.

INDUSTRY POSTS

Karen Powell, chief relationship officer at Franchise Source Brands International in Southbury and the founder/CEO of its Decor&You brand, has been appointed to the International Franchise Association's VetFran Committee. She will take a leadership role in the VetFran strategic initiative and Operation Enduring Opportunity, the franchise industry's campaign to help 75,000 veterans and military spouses, plus 5,000 wounded warriors, launch careers in franchising.

Wanli Wu, an associate with Hartford law firm Cantor Colburn, has been named to the board of directors of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association. She will serve a three-year term. Her practice focuses on patent prosecution in the chemical arts.

UCONN LAW ALUMNI HONOR FOUR

Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra was among four members of the Connecticut legal community to be honored at the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association Inc.'s annual meeting and awards dinner Oct. 10.

Segarra, class of 1985, was presented the Public Service Award. He was sworn in as mayor of Hartford on June 25, 2010, and was re-elected to the position last January. Segarra was born in Maricao, Puerto Rico, and moved to Hartford as a teenager. He is a graduate of both the University of Connecticut Schools of Social Work and Law.

The Distinguished Graduate Award was presented to Evan D. Flaschen '82, chair of the Financial Restructuring Group at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP.

Jeremy Paul, who recently ended his tenure at the Law School to take over as dean of Northeastern University School of law, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award. During his 23 years at UConn Law, Paul served as professor, associate dean for academic affairs, the first associate dean for research, and finally as dean and Thomas F. Gallivan Jr. Professor of Real Property Law.

Retired chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, Ellen Ash Peters, received the Medal of Excellence. She was named Chief Justice in 1984, the first woman to hold that seat.

WEST HARTFORD FACILITY HONORED

For the fifth consecutive year, Hughes Health & Rehabilitation in West Hartford has been selected as one of America's top nursing homes by the Consumers' Research Council of America.

The selection reflects the facility's high ratings in three categories: performance in health inspections, staffing and quality measures. The rating is based on data collected by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
