A former college athlete, Dan McConaghy values the exceptional teamwork he's experiencing at Consigli Construction Co. Inc.

“From the outside looking in, when I used to compete with Consigli, it was very clear to me that there was a singular purpose and drive within this company,” said McConaghy, who joined Consigli a few months ago as Hartford-based district area manager for Southern New England, overseeing Connecticut and Rhode Island. “That really only can happen, and the success can happen, through outstanding teamwork.”

That culture was attractive to McConaghy, who played baseball at Harvard University, where he knew Anthony Consigli, who played football there and today is the company's CEO. The two stayed in touch after Harvard while McConaghy spent 29 years at Gilbane Building Co., then about three years at Corvias Group before joining Consigli in 2018.

Consigli was among the few places he considered when returning to construction, primarily because of Anthony Consigli and his brother, Matthew, company president, fourth-generation leaders of the company founded in 1905.

“Their leadership and what they built and created here is very well-known in the industry,” McConaghy said.

McConaghy now experiences that culture from the inside, what he calls a unique employee dedication to helping do the right thing for colleagues, clients and subcontractors.

“That environment is really invigorating and really makes for a unique and great place to work,” he said. “That selfless attitude, to me, is pervasive in this culture and really distinguishes it from others.”

Further fueling that culture is a new employee stock ownership program Consigli started last year for its roughly 1,000 U.S. employees.

“For me, not having been part of (an ESOP) in any prior employment, it was just an added feature that made it that much more interesting to come to work here,” McConaghy said.

Other benefits/perks include a 401(k) with the firm matching 50 percent of contributions up to 8 percent of weekly salary, 529 college savings plan, tuition reimbursement, free health plan with participation in Consigli's wellness program, a paid-time-off day for community service, and half-day Fridays every other Friday between Memorial and Labor days, according to the company's Best Places to Work survey. In Hartford, Consigli has held its annual holiday party at The Bushnell, including a performance by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

New this year, Consigli added an extra holiday off and, to offer more flexibility, introduced a floating holiday schedule in which employees can choose up to three of their holidays. Employees and their families also volunteer for causes like Camp Courant and the company recognizes employee performance through awards and posts by the CEO on the company intranet.
