The Hartford announces leadership changes as 2 executives retire

The Hartford's A. Morris 'Mo' Tooker, Melinda Thompson and Don Hunt have been appointed to key leadership roles in the company.

Property and casualty insurer The Hartford announced several leadership changes Wednesday, following the upcoming retirements of two top executives, including General Counsel David Robinson, a well-known Greater Hartford business leader.

Robinson has spent 17 years working for the Hartford-based insurer and has been active in the business community. He currently sits on the boards of the MetroHartford Alliance and Capital Region Development Authority.

Also retiring is Stephanie Bush, head of small commercial and personal lines, who worked at The Hartford for more than 30 years.

Don Hunt, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary, will succeed Robinson as general counsel and head of law, compliance and government affairs.

A. Morris “Mo” Tooker has been named head of commercial lines, and Melinda Thompson, chief operating officer for personal lines, will become head of personal lines.

Currently, Tooker oversees middle and large commercial, global specialty and enterprise sales and distribution. He will retain that position in addition to the new one.

Tooker will continue to report to Chairman and CEO Christopher Swift. In their new roles, Thompson and Hunt also will report to Swift.

“These new appointments validate our strategic approach to succession planning and executive development and showcase the company’s outstanding pipeline of talent,” Swift said. “As we look to the future, I am energized by the opportunities that lie ahead for The Hartford.”

In addition, Chris Jones, chief operating officer for small commercial, has been named head of small commercial and will report to Tooker.

Also, Tracey Ant, head of middle and large commercial business units, has been named head of middle and large commercial, also reporting to Tooker. Her appointment takes effect Jan. 2, 2024.

All other appointments take effect March 1, 2024.

Tooker joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer and later became head of middle market. Before joining The Hartford, Tooker served as president of Stamford-based General Reinsurance Corp., now owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Thompson joined The Hartford in 1998 as a commercial lines underwriter. In her current role, she has overseen the rollout of the company’s new Prevail personal auto and homeowner’s products.

Hunt joined The Hartford in 2007 and has led legal teams responsible for securities and corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, investments, employment and employee benefits, intellectual property and privacy. Prior to The Hartford, he was a senior attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Swift said the two executives who are retiring, Bush and Robinson, had extraordinary careers at The Hartford and have made countless contributions to the company’s success.
