The Hartford Foundation awards more than $400K in grants to dozens of agencies in Greater Hartford region

The Hartford Foundation announced that it has awarded more than $400,000 in grants to 50 nonprofit agencies that provide food and other basic human needs to residents in the Greater Hartford region.

The grants – which range between $1,000 and $15,000 – will support both local and regional agencies in the area. Twenty-seven of the agency's 50 grants support food assistance and food access.

The agencies receiving funding include Community Health Resources, Inc., which is getting $13,500 for food, rental assistance and help with utilities; Covenant to Care for Children, Inc., which was awarded $5,500 to purchase school uniforms and school supplies, among others; Hands on Hartford, which is getting $12,000 for food programs, among others; House of Bread, which is getting $10,000 to purchase food and personal care items, among others; and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, which will get $6,500 for, among other things, food, diapers and clothing.

This year, the foundation announced that it was establishing a new approach to its annual Basic Human Needs Emergency Assistance grants to create a more open and equitable application process that will involve two rounds of grant-making. The second round will be announced later in the year.

“Providing for the most basic of human needs helps individuals and families stabilize themselves on their way toward upward social and economic mobility,” said Hartford Foundation Senior Community Investments Officer Cierra Stancil.
