TheaterWorks will perform two month-long productions next year at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as it continues its $4 million renovation project into 2019, officials said.

Rob Ruggiero, TheaterWorks’ producing artistic director, announced Tuesday Wadsworth, at 600 Main St., will host its productions of “Actually” from May 23 to June 23, 2019, and “Fully Committed” from Aug. 1 to Sept. 1.

Ruggiero said the theater company chose Wadsworth as its temporary venue to stay within a walkable distance from its downtown Hartford home at the City Arts on Pearl at 233 Pearl St. The half-mile move also ensures local businesses will not be adversely affected, he said.

“When we realized the scope and impact the renovations would have on our building, we were very concerned about finding the right home for our audience,” Ruggiero said. “Collaborating with the Wadsworth created a perfect fit and an awesome opportunity for both organizations.”

As previously reported, TheaterWorks is investing more than $4 million, including $2.5 million in state grants, to update its 91-year-old building. Renovations started this summer and will be completed in 2019.

The major overhaul will bring upgrades to the theater's lobby area, the building's original staircase, the theater's electric and heating systems and a second elevator and new bathrooms will also be added.
