Connecticut homebuilding activity slowed in April, but the number of new housing permits issued during the first four months of the year is still up 29% from last year, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Connecticut towns and cities authorized 289 new housing units in April, down from 406 permits issued in the year-ago period, Census data shows.
The majority of those permits (171) were for single-family homes, while 102 permits were issued for larger apartment developments with five or more units, Census data shows.
So far this year, from January through April, 2,006 housing permits have been issued by Connecticut cities and towns, up from 1,558 permits issued during the same time period last year, Census data shows.
New Haven and Westport authorized the most permits in April at 24, followed by Newington (20) and Cheshire (16).
During the first four months of the year, Stamford has issued the most permits (409), followed by Branford (197), New Haven (187), Bethel (133) and Fairfield (118).
