Home Depot will erect solar panels on the rooftops of 50 stores in six states, including three in Connecticut, the home improvement retailer announced Thursday.

The three in Connecticut are West Hartford, Waterbury and Trumbull, a spokesman said.

The company has 29 stores across the state.

Home Depot said each installation would include 1,000 panels and would reduce electricity demand at each store by as much as 35 percent per year, or the equivalent of powering 2,300 average U.S. homes.

Construction will take place throughout this year.

The company is aiming to have 135 megawatts of alternative and renewable energy in place by 2020.
