Three-night digital art festival kicks off in downtown Hartford Nov. 13

Gov. Ned Lamont will flip the switch next Wednesday on a three-day public art festival that will light up the nights in downtown Hartford.

Frontier Communications has teamed up with public art nonprofit RiseUP to host “Magic Murals.”

The three-day event will feature montages of more than 100 pieces of submitted art digitally projected on the side of Frontier’s 10-story office building at 111 Trumbull St.

The shows will use an array of expensive digital projectors, and will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 13, 14 and 15.

The event begins with a 5 p.m. kickoff party at the carousel in Bushnell Park. Each night will include food trucks and music, said Matt Conway, RiseUP’s executive director.

“It’s about highlighting and supporting local artists and giving them a platform to get their work out there publicly,” Conway said.

Frontier donated $50,000 toward the event’s approximately $75,000 cost. The Bushnell Performing Arts Center contributed $7,500 and some of its library of video art. RiseUP is covering the rest from its operating budget.

Conway said the event could have cost double, but in-kind donations from The Bushnell and others deeply reduced expenses. Panasonic loaned four projectors, he noted.

Conway hopes the installation will help his organization in a longer-term effort to raise about $1 million to buy projectors and put on shows throughout Connecticut.

“One of the big things for us is trying to get Connecticut on the map,” Conway said. “Honestly, we want to catch up to what a lot of other cities are doing.”
