Tong joins dishwasher fight after active year challenging Trump rules

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong started 2021 much in the same way he spent 2020 ‒ partnering with other states to challenge rulings from the Trump administration.

Tong joined a coalition of 15 attorneys general and the city of New York on Monday in filing a lawsuit challenging a recent move by the Department of Energy to weaken energy efficiency standards for home dishwashers.

Trump ‒ who made efficiency rules for dishwashers, showers and other appliances a campaign issue ‒ had pushed for regulations exempting most home dishwashers from standards. The change was made official in late October.

Tong and his fellow AGs argue that the new rule violates the Energy Policy Conservation Act, the Administrative Procedure Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.

“We’re suing to protect these critical energy efficiency standards that reduce pollution and prevent consumers from facing higher energy bills,” Tong said in a statement.

Tong joined in several suits in 2020 challenging Trump’s legal and election strategies along with his push to eliminate or weaken environmental protections.

“Connecticut is an active leader in dozens of multistate battles to defend decades of bedrock environmental law, regulations and precedent that have protected clean air, water, land and biodiversity.” Tong said in a year-end open letter to constituents.

The state attorney general’s Consumer Protection Department and Consumer Assistance Unit doubled its caseload in 2020 to serve 7,000 people and secure over $1.5 million in direct refunds and relief, including refunds for consumers forced to cancel travel plans, weddings and other events due to the pandemic.

So a commercial establishment can still use the hot water in a way that really cleans dishes, but regular people cannot? Sorry Mr. Tong, this is just correcting a regulatory error by the US government.
