The top-ranked golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, has agreed to play in the 2023 Travelers Championship for the fifth time, event organizers said Wednesday.

“We know we’re going to get a deep, star-studded player field, so hearing that Rory has committed is a great start and wonderful news for our tournament and our fans,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “Rory has enjoyed coming to Connecticut and he’s played well at TPC River Highlands.

The annual tournament, played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, will take place in late June. McIlroy is currently the No. 1 player in the world, according to the World Golf Ranking.

Top players on the PGA Tour will compete in the Travelers Championship again this year, organizers said. The championship was recently given “elevated” status on the PGA Tour, which means a higher purse for the winners.

This year, players will compete for $20 million, the most in tournament history.

McIlroy has won the PGA Tour 23 times and has been named PGA Tour Player of the Year three times. His most recent victory was at the CJ CUP in South Carolina.

“Rory is a great friend who has been incredibly supportive of our tournament, and we appreciate the relationship we’ve built with him,” said Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers. “Having Rory here competing against the top players in the world will really take this year’s Travelers Championship to the next level.”
