A company that operates buses throughout the greater Waterbury, Meriden and Wallingford areas has finished moving into its new headquarters in Watertown.

The North East Transportation Co. Inc., or NET, recently relocated to 761 Frost Bridge Rd., Watertown. The site had at one time been a drive-in theater. Now, the company is housed in a newly constructed facility with administrative offices and work areas, space for vehicle storage and maintenance, and covered employee parking.

Previously, the company operated out of a converted brass manufacturing facility in Waterbury, where it had been for the past 36 years. This company rented this space, which had become too small for its needs.

NET has a management contract with the state Department of Transportation to provide public bus transportation in its service region. The company also gives rides to the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

Kevin Nursick, a spokesman for the DOT, said the state owns the Watertown facility. It cost $81 million, 80 percent of which was covered by federal dollars and 20 percent by state funds.

“It is a state facility used for state transit services provided by a private contractor,” Nursick said.

Construction started in late 2015 and finished late last year.

NET was originally established in 1925. Today, it has a fleet of 84 vehicles and employs 155 people.

STV|DPM, a project-management firm with offices in Hartford, managed NET’s move, including all related scheduling, staff transfers, hiring and supervision.

STV|DPM Senior Project Planner Roxanne Perugino called the move a “challenge.” NET needed a smooth relocation process which wouldn’t interfere with its around the clock operations.

“The move-in dates were constantly changing, however, with an understanding moving company and the great staff at NET, it was a tremendous success,” Perugino said.
