For the second year in a row, the Travelers Championship has donated over $1.5 million to 140 charities. The PGA tour event has raised more than $10 million since becoming the Travelers Championship in 2007.

The tournament, which began as the Insurance City Open at Wethersfield Country Club in 1952, has raised more than $33 million for charity since its inception. All of the net proceeds from the tournament, now held at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, go to nonprofits.

“Having surpassed $1.5 million for the second year in a row is an incredible achievement for the community,” said Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube. “The number of local and regional organizations we’re able to impact on a yearly basis with the help of programs like Birdies for Charity is what makes the Travelers Championship so special.”

“When we decided to sponsor the tournament in 2007, one of our primary goals was to support the Connecticut community,” said Travelers executive vice president and CAO Andy Bessette. “Now, nine years later, we are extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, having reached more than $10 million in charitable contributions.”

The 2016 Travelers Championship will be held Aug. 4-7. Its normal June date changes for 2016 because golf has become an Olympic sport.
