State and Travelers Championship officials kicked off a week-long worth of events Monday at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

The state’s flagship PGA Tour event, running from Wednesday to Sunday, held an opening ceremony Monday attended by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Players will have their first practice round on Tuesday after many of the tournament’s top attendees competed this past weekend in the U.S. Open at Sinnecock Hills in New York, including champion Brooks Koepka.

The week of events features a celebrity pro-am on Tuesday, with players including Jim Calhoun, Ray Allen, Chris Berman, George Lopez and Randy Edsall.

Eversource Energy will also host a junior program on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Trinity Health of New England will oversee a military caddie program and Farmington Bank will host a celebrity mini golf tournament.

The Travelers Championship begins early Thursday morning with a deep player field that includes Koepka, last year's winner Jordan Spieth, two-time champion Bubba Watson, Jason Day, recent Master's champion Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk, among others.

The tournament’s purse is $7 million and the winner’s share is $1.26 million.

All proceeds from the tournament are donated to regional charities.
