Tribune Publishing has tapped an executive editor with Hearst Connecticut Media to take over as executive editor of the Hartford Courant, the newspaper reported late Tuesday.

According to the Courant, Helen Bennett, who serves as editor of the New Haven Register, The Middletown Press and Register Citizen, will replace former editor-in-chief and publisher Andrew Julien, who last month was named executive editor of the New York Daily News.

“I’m very excited about this new opportunity,” Bennett told the newspaper. “I truly look forward to working with the outstanding team at the Hartford Courant. I think it will be a wonderful challenge. We’ll continue to serve the people of Connecticut in the best way possible.”

The Courant reported that Bennett will start Dec. 27.

Bennett was appointed executive editor of Digital First Media’s Connecticut group of newspapers, magazines and websites in Nov. 2016. She previously worked at the Register as a reporter, suburban editor and eventually managing editor.

She also taught journalism at Southern Connecticut State University.

The Courant operates under Chicago-based Tribune Publishing, which was acquired by New York-based hedge fund Alden Global Capital earlier this year.
