Alumni and donors at Trinity College in Hartford contributed more than $5 million in donations since mid-April, as current students and faculty struggle with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The money was donated as Trinity College has set a goal to raise $10 million to fund various efforts to mitigate the financial and health effects from the pandemic, Trinity said in a statement.

"Over the past month and a half, alumni and parents have shown the compassion and dedication that are a hallmark of this community by contributing more than $5 million to support families and faculty," Trinity said.

Donated funds will go toward Trinity's Parents Fund and Student Emergency Fund, which were established to provide critical financial aid assistance and help cover unanticipated costs for students and their families like travel costs and computer equipment to enable distance learning, Trinity said.

Some of the donated money came from more than 50 families of current students who decided to forego their housing refund, and repurpose it as a donation, Trinity said.

The fundraising push comes as some colleges and universities in Greater Hartford and around the state announce plans to reopen campuses that have been shut down for months amid the pandemic.

Trinity hasn't yet announced a reopening plan, but the University of Hartford in West Hartford, and the statewide Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system announced plans within the past week. Both will reopen campuses to residential students in late-August, and resume a normal schedule from then until Thanksgiving, at which point they will move to all-digital until the semester ends in December.
