Trinity College to launch post-grad certificate in urban planning

Trinity College announced it’s launching a new graduate certificate program in urban planning beginning in the fall 2020 semester.

Officials in Trinity’s Center for Urban Planning and Global Studies created the certificate -- which will run in partnership with Trinity’s urban studies, and master’s in public policy programs -- in part because of the dearth in urban planning graduate programs at Connecticut colleges and universities.

“In a field where a graduate degree has become the professional standard, the lack of a graduate planning program is hurting the state’s ability to recruit qualified planning professionals,” Trinity’s announcement said. In a highly urbanized state, urban planners are essential to the social and economic strength of the state.”

Officials from Trinity on Monday did not immediately have details about what and how many courses and credits would encompass the certificate, and how many people could enroll in it.

In its announcement of the certificate, Trinity said its a step toward offering a master’s in urban planning.

“Though the need for a full master’s degree in urban planning persists, the new certificate at Trinity offers an option for students and professionals who want to gain competency in planning and policy while studying in state,” the college said.
