Hartford-based Trinity College will become the first college or university in the state to offer a master’s degree in urban planning when the graduate program debuts this fall.
UConn offers an undergraduate degree in urban and regional planning.
The new graduate program at Trinity, announced earlier this week, is aimed at addressing issues that cities face now and into the future, according to Garth Myers, director of Trinity’s Center for Urban and Global Studies, and the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of Urban International Studies.
In a statement, Myers said: “In the Greater Hartford area, we have transportation issues, housing issues, environmental issues – all of these are addressed in our courses… Also crucial is that we look at community development and inequality, giving people grounding in what creates those situations, and giving them useful tools in planning for the transportation future.”
Trinity said the master’s graduate program is aligned with the college’s graduate certificate program in urban planning, which has been in place since the fall of 2020.
The master’s graduate program consists of 12 course credits.
Trinity said students in the program will take four core courses, four required courses and three courses toward a concentration, in addition to completing a thesis or final project.
